Corb Lund officially was announced as the newest addition to New West Records’ roster on February 17th. “I'm really excited to have made this signing with New West; I think they're perfect for me, and I think it's a great fit based on the vibe of their label, and the kinds of artists they get behind” says Lund who’s new album is anticipated for Fall 2009. His current album, "Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier!", released November 2007 in Canada on Stony Plain Records, features 13 songs written by Corb Lund and was once again produced by Harry Stinson.
On Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier!, Lund's fifth album, he writes about warfare via something he knows about first hand: horses. It's been almost a century since most of us pondered the cavalry's integral role in military history, and armed with plenty of books on the subject, Lund did just that and set out to write about "timeless themes" rather than today's headlines.
Not only does Lund write the kind of timeless melodies that sound like they've been handed down by oral tradition, he boasts a kick-ass, bare-bones backing band he calls The Hurtin' Albertans: Kurt Ciesla (String bass), Grant 'Demon' Siemens (Fender Telecaster, lap steel, dobro, banjo) & Brady Valgardson (Drums).
Though many of the songs on Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier! tell tales of foreign lands, Lund has built his career by spinning distinctly Albertan anecdotes for the past decade, on gold-selling albums like 2002's Five Dollar Bill and 2005's Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer.
Ultimately, Lund's lyrics are what set him apart from every singer/songwriter trying to reinvent the wagon wheel. With a firm grasp of history, a colorful vocabulary and an aversion to typical love songs, Lund is a storyteller, first and foremost. That makes him part of a dying breed. |
